CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) - This weekend, crews on behalf of the Ohio Department of Transportation will close portions of both I-71 and I-77 approaching downtown Cleveland. Drivers from the south should use SR 176 northbound to I-490 eastbound to I-77 northbound to reach downtown. Both roadways will reopen to allow traffic during Sunday's Browns game.
"We're wrapping up many projects for the winter months," said ODOT spokesperson Jocelynn Clemings. "There's a tremendous amount of activity happening around the city and we've coordinated our work plan to be least impactful to those who visit downtown."
Work on I-77 will help to return the roadway to its pre-construction configuration in the area just north of I-480. On I-71, crews will work to resurface the bridge that carries I-71 over the Jennings Freeway near the Metro Curve approaching the Innerbelt. Additional weekend closures will be necessary for both projects.
What you need to know:
On I-77 NB and SB: I-77 northbound and southbound will close between I-480 and SR 21 just north of I-480 beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. Drivers will be detoured via SR 176 and I-490.
All traffic leaving downtown Cleveland via I-77 southbound will be detoured via I-490 westbound to SR 176 southbound.
The northbound lanes will reopen by 11 a.m. Sunday. The southbound lanes will reopen by 4 p.m. to allow Browns fans to enter and leave downtown Cleveland.
The ramps from I-480 eastbound and westbound to I-77 northbound will also be closed during this time. When the lanes reopen, drivers should be alert for shifted traffic patterns. The ramp from I-480 eastbound to I-77 northbound, which has been closed since March, is also expected to reopen.
On I-71 NB: I-71 northbound will be closed at the Metro Curve starting at 7 p.m. Friday. Drivers will be detoured via I-490 eastbound to I-77 northbound to reach downtown and I-90.
The roadway will reopen to one lane of northbound traffic for drivers heading into Cleveland for Sunday's Browns game from 6 a.m. through 1 p.m. but will close again through 6 a.m. Monday.
The southbound lanes of I-71 are not impacted by this work.
