Robbery suspect ends up crashing into river

ELYRIA, OH (WOIO) - U.S. Marshals arrested Raymond Edward Smith, 39, Wednesday morning after fishing him out of the Black River in Elyria.

Smith was wanted for an August assault and robbery. Police say he choked the victim until they were unconscious.

Task force officers received information that Smith was in the 400 block of 10th St. in Elyria but when officers arrived, he fled.

While trying to evade police Smith lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the Black River, where he was safely taken into custody.

Smith is charged with trafficking in persons, robbery, and possession of a weapon.
