CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A robbery in Parma Heights ended with shots fired and a suspect dead Thursday. Local agencies are working together to try to get all the facts.
Det. Sgt. Steve Scharschmidt with Parma Heights Police says witnesses called 911 to report an aggravated robbery at the Papa John's on the corner of Oakwood and Pearl in Parma Heights. Callers described a male who had just robbed the business, brandishing a hand gun. Police caught up with the suspect in a pick-up truck and a chase ensued.
Scharschmidt says around 1:15 p.m., the suspect entered I-480 eastbound at Tiedeman Road and crashed into the median just past State Road.
According to Scharschmidt, the suspect exited the vehicle with what may have been a replica gun and pointed it at officers. Police then fired six shots at the suspect, killing him. Parma, Parma Heights and Brooklyn officers all fired at the suspect, but Scharschmidt says it is unknown which shot was fatal.
Scharschmidt says tests will need to be conducted to determine if the gun was a toy.
He says the suspect only got away with $89.
The medical examiner will identify the suspect.
Around 5:30 p.m., the truck was towed from the scene and I-480 eastbound started reopening after being closed for hours during investigation.
