LORAIN, OH (WOIO) -

Lorain Police need the public's help finding the driver who hit a 17-year-old boy on Monday night and, then fled the scene.

Andrea Bentley was Jayvian Johnson's girlfriend. She was walking with him around 9 p.m. on West 23rd Street when out of nowhere, she says, a car plowed into him from behind.

"He just hit him and then he just flew up in the air," said Andrea.

Jayvian, apparently, never saw or heard the car coming.

"He was listening to music. That's probably why he didn't hear the car," said Andrea. "He had earbuds in."

Surveillance video from Lorain Umadaop shows headlights of the car come into view. The car plows right into him and never slowed or stopped.  (See surveillance video in player above)

Andrea was shocked to see Jayvian hit and left bleeding after he went airborne.

"When he came down, he hit him again and he flew to the side and hit the pole," Andrea recalled. "Seeing that made me break down. I've been crying all night. I didn't get no sleep. I was up all night."

David Bellamy was sitting on his steps and witnessed the incident.

"It was going about 35-40 mph when it hit the kid, 'cause you could hear the 'smack,' like an impact," described Bellamy.

Bellamy rushed over to try and help, still not believing what he just saw.

"It was, like, a Dodge and he stayed on this side until he got right down to the middle, and that's where the kids was standing. He didn't stop, didn't swerve, didn't do none of that, didn't go around him. He could have went around him. But he hit the kid, flew up in the air, and just kept going," said Bellamy.

Jayvian was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain and then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. He died on Tuesday morning.

Another eyewitness says she has many unanswered questions and a possible motive.

"Why was the car on this side when it's supposed to be on the opposite side of the street? So, I think, honestly, somebody wanted to hit him," said Lynn.

Anyone who may have witnessed this crash or has any additional information can contact Lorain Police at (440) 204-2115.
