AVON LAKE, OH (WOIO) - Student and staff at Avon Lake's elementary schools have partnered with Cleveland Clinic to kick off the "Walk on Wednesdays" program that promotes walking and all its benefits.
Now through November 18, more than 1,500 students and staff will start each Wednesday morning by walking for 15 to 20 minutes.
"Students and staff will walk at their respective schools simultaneously," said Mike Matthews, Eastview Elementary School principal. "We automatically tend to go to sports as a way to get some exercise or physical activity. Walking is something everyone can do at any time. It gets right down to the basics of physical activity. Our high school athletic trainer and a Cleveland Clinic employee will also be on hand to get the students and staff warmed up before walking."
"With the childhood obesity rate at an all-time high, it's becoming more and more important to encourage children to start moving," said Natalie Rudd, BSN, RN, Senior Director of Community Outreach for Cleveland Clinic. "We're proud to partner with Avon Lake City Schools to raise community awareness and to impart these positive habits in students."
