Driver may have known teen he's accused of running down

LORAIN, OH (WOIO) -

The man police say struck and killed a Lorain teen and kept going appeared before a judge Wednesday morning. 

The driver, Damion Cheers, 25, of Lorain pleaded not guilty in the death of Jayvian Johnson. Prosecutors have charged Cheers with operating a vehicle without a license and fleeing the scene. His bond was set at $2500. 

Jayvian was killed while walking with his girlfriend on West 23rd in Lorain on the evening of Oct. 19 when out of nowhere, she said, a car plowed into him from behind. Surveillance video captured the deadly crash. 

Cheers turned himself in Oct. 27. 

His lawyer said he seems remorseful and he may actually know the victim.
