SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - An attorney who didn't show up for his client's sentencing died in early October.
Derek Ward was supposed to be sentenced Wednesday in a Shaker Heights courtroom for a deadly hit and run. The judge had to postpone sentencing when the lawyer didn't show.
The court found out the attorney was found dead in his office on Oct. 6.
Ward was convicted of striking and killing a jogger with his vehicle in Shaker Heights and fled the scene.
James Caffrey, a fifth-grade Woodbury Elementary School teacher, was jogging down South Park Blvd. Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m. when he was hit. Police say Ward struck and killed Caffrey as he was fleeing police.
Ward was originally pulled over in University Heights for invalid tags. He stopped for a brief moment, then took off. After hitting the victim, Ward jumped out of the vehicle and took off on foot.
Police arrested him in August.
