WESTLAKE, OH (WOIO) -

The FBI has issued a chilling warning for police officers this Halloween.

The agency put out an alert of possible attacks against law enforcement, called a "Halloween Revolt."

The FBI says an anarchist group known as the National Liberation Militia told its members to wear Halloween masks and carry weapons like bricks and firearms, cause a disturbance, and then ambush police officers who respond.

Since Halloween falls on a Saturday, police expect to be busier than usual. They’re taking the alert seriously.

"We'd have our head on a swivel anyway. But this just kind of heightens things, maybe gets a little more anxiety, adrenaline up there,” said Captain Guy Turner with the Westlake Police Department.

Capt. Turner says most departments have extra manpower on for the spookiest night of the year.

Now they have more to look out for.

"The key is to probably keep moving. And be aware. Because we know when a call comes in and doesn't sound right,” he said.

We reached out to several other police departments. They didn't want to share any specifics on extra safety measures for security reasons.

But with a strain already on police and community relations, Westlake Police say they're taking this warning seriously.

"We know we're not at the top of many Christmas card lists and that tends to color the way we do business. But there's a lot of great people out there that are very supportive of police. They're the people we're counting on," Capt. Turner said.

The FBI released this statement:

"As part of the continuous dialogue with our law enforcement partners, the FBI routinely shares information about potential threats to better enable law enforcement to protect the communities they serve. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to law enforcement."
