AVON LAKE, OH (WOIO) -

Police in Avon Lake have released new information about what was initially thought to be an attempted child abduction Monday morning.

Police now say the 12-year-old who reported that a man in a white van tried to snatch her off the street "embellished" the event and provided inaccurate information.

The girl initially told police that she was walking on Grove Street when she approached by a man who asked her if she needed a ride. She told police the man got out and tried to grab her arm, but she kicked him and ran away.

Police now say they will be working with the parents of the child to determine the best course of action.

Avon Lake Police want to remind residents that they treat all allegations involving the safety of children seriously, and will continue to be visible in and around schools.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the Avon Lake Police Department at (440) 933-4567.
