AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

Akron residents have elected the city's first new mayor in nearly 30 years.

Democrat Dan Horrigan defeated Republican Eddie Sipplen and Independent candidate William Melver.

Horrigan replaces former Mayor Don Plusquellic, who resigned suddenly in May.

City Council President Garry Moneypenny was sworn in as acting mayor on June 1 but stepped down from his position on June 10 after details were leaked regarding him inappropriately touching a female employee.

According to the city charter, Council President Jeff Fusco took over after Moneypenny's resignation took effect. Fusco said he would serve as interim mayor, but had no intention of seeking the office.
