CANTON, OH (WOIO) -

An 8-year-old girl has died after her family's Canton home caught fire on Saturday morning. Her brother and parents all managed to escape and were rushed to the hospital.

Between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., firefighters were called to the 1400 block of Maddrell Court for a house fire with a person trapped inside.

Neighbors said they woke up to the father yelling.

"Only thing I remember was the father screaming, 'My daughter! My daughter is still in there'" said neighbor Scott Jones.

Jones says he tried to help.

"By the time I got up here to the house, the whole front porch was full involved, and there's nothing nobody could have done," he said.

When firefighters entered the home, they found the body of 8-year-old Azzie Thomas on the second floor.

According to the Canton Fire Department, the child's father, 52-year-old Anthony Thomas, mother, 38-year-old Tabitah Merry, and 9-year-old brother all made it out and were transported to local hospitals. Her 15-year-old brother was not home at the time of the fire.

One neighbor said Merry was covered in soot and had burns from trying to save the girl.

Outside the home, a memorial grows for little Azzie.

"It's sad that child had to perish like that," said Jones.

While the cause is still under investigation, the damage is estimated at $34,500.
