AVON LAKE, OH (WOIO) - The Avon Lake Police Department is warning the community to be on alert after a resident reported an attempted distraction burglary on Saturday.
According to the female resident, a male entered her home claiming he was from the water department and needed to check if the water was orange, due to a water line being struck nearby. While in her home, the male began speaking Spanish to someone on a cell phone, as he pretended to check several faucets throughout the house. The male left abruptly, as soon as the resident picked up an incoming phone call.
Police say this appears to be an isolated incident and there have been no other similar reports.
Residents are reminded to always ask for ID. If you are ever unsure, call the police department before letting an unknown person into your home. If you experience this type of scam or see suspicious people in your neighborhood, call police immediately.
