AKRON, OH (WOIO) - The Summit County Medical Examiner said that the Ohio Mortuary Response Team was called to the Akron plane crash site on Wednesday.
Dr. Lisa Kohler said that the team was a new group of various specialists, including those who can help identify victims, set up a portable morgue and offer family assistance.
Their website says the mortuary response team is "available to help in times of extraordinary needs."
Team members include pathologists, funeral directors and forensic specialists and are called when the local medical examiner's office may be overwhelmed by mass fatalities. They will fingerprint and use DNA analysis. They make sure families know that the victims are treated with dignity and respect.
Duties could include:
- Temporary morgue facilities
- Victim identification
- Forensic dental pathology
- Forensic anthropology methods
The team was formed by the Ohio Funeral Directors Association in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency.
