BARBERTON, OH (WOIO) - Family and friends of slain Akron police officer Justin Winebrenner gathered to remember their loved one Sunday.

Winebrenner was killed by Kenan Ivery at Papa Don's Pub in Akron on November 16, 2014.

Ivery was thrown out of Papa Don's and returned with a gun. He got into an altercation and shot five people, including Winebrenner, who was trying to intervene. Ivery was sentenced to life without parole for the murder.

Sunday, Winebrenner's loved ones released balloons at the Barberton High School soccer field in remembrance.

His family was also surprised with a tribute rocker built by Hero's Rock.

Scott and Trish Snyder of Mantua craft specialty rockers for the children of fallen heroes.
