AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Slain Akron Police Officer Justin Winebrenner was honored by fellow officers, family and friends Monday.
Winebrenner was shot and killed on November 16, 2014 at a pub while off-duty. He was trying to remove a man who was causing trouble.
Several remembrances were held Sunday and Monday to honor the fallen officer's life and career.
On Monday, Winebrenner's name was added to the Wall of Fallen Officers Memorial at the police academy on the University of Akron campus.
"It's absolutely amazing all the support we have been getting this past year, it's just incredible. Every day there is someone else who is sending a message or a phone call letting us know they are there and they are thinking about us and it's absolutely amazing," said Alyse Shanafelt, Winebrenner's fiancee.
Sunday, family and friends released balloons and presented Winebrenner's daughter with a special rocker shaped like a police cruiser.
Kenan Ivery, the man convicted of Winebrenner's murder, is serving a life sentence for the crime.
