Former Cleveland police officer arrested with gun at airport

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A 59-year-old man was arrested at Hopkins International Airport after a handgun was found in his coat pocket, according to the Transportation Security Agency.

TSA officers spotted the Magnum revolver .22 Wednesday morning, as Thomas E. Roper Jr.'s coat was being screened on the x-ray machine at the security checkpoint. It's unclear if the gun was loaded or not.

In 2009, Cleveland 19 featured Roper in a story about overtime for officers who were driving Mayor Frank Jackson around town as part of his security detail.
Cleveland 19 reached out to Roper, but so far no response and we don't know why the gun was in his coat.
Roper was arrested without incident. So far, he has not been charged but the feds could hand down a fine of $7,500 as they do in many of these types of incidents.

Last year, a total of 12 guns were discovered at checkpoints by TSA at Hopkins Airport compared to 6 in 2014.
