Prayer vigil for 9-year-old killed in sledding accident

AMHERST, OH (WOIO) - Supporters of a North Ridgeville family come together to hold a prayer vigil at Great Lakes Church in Amherst. The vigil will be held at 4 p.m.

Nine-year-old Drew Hayden passed away Friday from his injuries due to a sledding accident Tuesday.

North Ridgeville police say nine-year-old Drew was struck by a car while sledding.

The accident happened at Meadow Lakes Blvd. near Hunter Lake Drive. Police say the boy had been sledding down a hill prior to being hit.

Drew was transported to Westlake's St. John West Shore and then taken by Life Flight to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center.

The investigation is not complete, however there are likely to be no charges against the driver of the vehicle involved.

The family released a statement Friday after Drew's death:

Our son Drew Hayden passed away this afternoon. We are heartbroken, and know that our community shares in that feeling. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at MetroHealth, who worked tirelessly to save his life and the community for its prayers. Drew's organs are being donated to
Lifebanc and we find some comfort in knowing that a part of him will live on through others. He was a light in our lives and he will be forever in our hearts. He would have loved nothing more than knowing he will be a hero to so many. He was the kindest, most loving boy with an imagination far beyond what we can put to words which made him the greatest son. We cannot say enough words to thank the community for their outpouring of support, love, hugs, prayers, donations and anything that we needed.

A Go Fund Me account has been set up to assist the Hayden family with medical costs.

Aside from the account, a North Ridgeville resident has placed a box at the fire department and at the police department if you want to get the family a card.
