DANVILLE, OH (WOIO) - A man who was reportedly 'looking to kill a cop" has been arrested.

Danville police received a call late Sunday night from a woman who told them officers in the area were in danger. She said that her ex-boyfriend, Herschel Ray Jones, had left with weapons and was looking to kill an officer.

Less than an hour later deputies discovered Danville Police Officer Thomas Cottrell on the ground behind the Danville Municipal Building. He was dead, his service weapon had been taken and his cruiser was missing. Police have not said how the officer died. An autopsy is expected Tuesday.

At 1:36 a.m. Jones was seen running from a home on East Washington St. After a short foot chase Jones was taken into custody in the area of the Danville Park.

Officers from the Knox County Sheriff's Office and B.C.I. are investigating.

A county chief prosecutor says he expects a murder charge to be brought against Jones, but it's not clear how soon that could happen.

Knox County Prosecutor Chip McConville says 32-year-old Jones was being held Monday for violating the conditions set when he was released from prison last year. He says that's enough to hold him until charges are filed.

Danville is located about 60 miles northwest of Columbus.
