LAKEWOOD, OH (WOIO) -

Scrappy is 4-year-old Aleeah Williams' best friend and, according to her family, helps her with her illness.

"She has cystic fibrosis and has a very long treatment in the morning and in the evening," said Elizabeth Spais, Aleeah's grandmother.

The issue: Pit bulls have not been allowed in Lakewood, Ohio, city limits since 2008 and Scrappy isn't a trained service dog.

On Tuesday night, Aleeah's grandmother and others appeared before Lakewood City Council asking for the ordinance to be altered.

Kerry Stack, a dog trainer and owner of Darwin Dogs, told council members, "I ask you please allow Aleeah and her lovely dog Scrappy to be the change in legislation."

Aleeah's grandmother truly believes Scrappy, who moved into Lakewood along with her son, makes a big difference in the life of her granddaughter.

"I hope and pray that the council would realize she has been through enough," Elizabeth Spais said.

A hearing in February will determine if Scrappy stays or goes.
