HOUSTON (WOIO) - Canton Police Officer Ryan Davis is making the emotional journey to find his new K9 partner in Houston.
Earlier this month, Davis was responding to a burglary call at a Fishers Foods grocery store when his partner K9 Jethro #60 was shot three times by alleged suspect Kelontre Barefield, 22, of Cleveland. Police returned fire striking Barefield once in the leg before his apprehension.
K9 Jethro was immediately transported to the Stark County Emergency Veterinary Hospital where he died the following day. Officer Davis never left his partner's side the entire time. K9 Jethro received a full police funeral service at the Canton Civic Center on Jan. 14.
K9 Jethro's death was felt around the world.
Sunday, Officer Davis flew into Houston to meet with K9s4Cops, a non profit organization that will donate a new K9 from the Houston K9 Academy. Officer Davis will spend time with three fully trained K9s and make his selection after working with the animals this weekend. After the first day of viewing. Officer Davis says "still too early to tell" and that all the candidates are still under consideration.
Who is your favorite? Who will Officer Davis pick?
