Alert: Local police warning citizens of police impersonation scams

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Akron Police are investigating two separate reports where victims say they got a call from someone posing as an officer with the Akron Police Department.

One incident happened in Shaker Heights and another in Akron. In both cases, suspects have called elderly residents and told them they were police officers who are investigating fraud at their local bank. The scammers then asked the victims to help them catch the thieves in a covert operation, urging them to withdraw large sums of money from their personal bank accounts.

One victim drove the suspect to the bank to take out the money. They other met the suspect at her home after taking out cash.

Akron Police said they would never request a citizen to withdraw any money from personal accounts. If you get a phone call like this, call police and provide them with as much information as you can about the call.

Police also said it's important to warn elderly family and friends about this scam and the importance of never withdrawing money without verifying the legitimacy of the call.
