CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - One day after one of his victims died, Oakwood Village abduction suspect Kyle Johnson was found dead in his jail cell.
Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri confirmed that a Medical Unit was called to Erie County Prison around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon for inmate Johnson.
He did not reveal how the 25-year-old died, but jail sources tell Cleveland 19 he hanged himself. The coroner has been notified.
Erie police and detectives are investigating his death.
Oakwood Village resident Maryann Johns was stunned when she heard the news.
"I just can't believe he did that I mean what else could he do I'm sorry that all this happened especially to a young person," said Johns.
Saturday Kum Miller, the Erie County woman who police say Johnson attacked with a crowbar, died from her injuries.
Miller was attacked on, April 19, when Johnson broke into her home. He attacked her husband as well. During the attack Johnson was shot by the Miller's neighbor.
Police said Johnson kidnapped his ex-girlfriend from her mother's home last Monday in Oakwood Village then set fire to the house. She was also beaten and found in the basement of the Erie home.
Johnson, of Warrensville Heights, was facing eight charges in Pennsylvania including attempted homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and terrorist threats. He was being held on $500,000 bond.
"I'm happy when anybody like that is caught and what he did other was unforgivable. He was definitely a coward but nothing is as bad as you beating a woman," said Gloria Strong.
