WESTLAKE, OH (WOIO) - An army veteran having lunch in Crocker Park saved 7 baby ducks from a storm drain.
Joe Reinart was at the Cheesecake Factory in Westlake with his family when his wife noticed commotion around a sewer. There was a duck waddling around the sewer.
Somehow a brood of ducklings flew the coop and ended up with their goose almost cooked in a sewer.
Reinart, an Army veteran took action. With his brother behind him he was lowered into the dark hole.
"We pulled off the grate of the manhole and I said hold on tight for me cause it's 6 or 7 feet down," said Reinart.
One by one Reinart used a winning strategy to save the ducklings.
"I actually used my Cavs hat to scoop them out of the sewer," he said.
The rescued ducklings quacked all the way to their mom, who stood by patiently as the Army vet saved her family.
"The one lady after we got them out, she was like you restored my faith in humanity. I was like it's not a big deal. It was a nice thing to do," he said.
