CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - After being sentenced to two life terms for a deadly fire that killed her daughters, Angela Garcia is asking for a new trial.
Garcia was convicted in 2001. It was her third trial. Prosecutors say she set the fire that killed Nyeemah Garcia, 3, and Nijah Evans, 2 in Nov. 1999 to collect insurance money.
Garcia's lawyers say she was convicted on fire investigation techniques that have since been discredited.
The fire was initially ruled the fire accidental. The cause was later changed to arson after investigators learned Garcia had ballooned the prices of the contents in her home for insurance purposes.
She was eventually indicted on several charges including aggravated murder, manslaughter and insurance fraud.
