Youngstown State receives $1M gift for scholarships, jobs

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio car dealer has pledged a $1 million gift to Youngstown State University to endow a scholarship fund and to help the school create campus jobs for students.

Flor "Shorty" Navarro and his wife, Elba, announced the gift alongside university President Jim Tressel during an event at Youngstown State on Wednesday.

The university says in a statement that Navarro moved to Youngstown from Puerto Rico in 1951 when he was 14 and now owns a car dealership in Salem, south of Youngstown in Mahoning (mah-HOH'-ning) County.

Navarro and his wife previously donated $100,000 to the university to fund scholarships for Hispanic students and $100,000 to pay help for construction of the school's Veterans Resource Center.
