Police: Off-duty officer fires shot at armed suspect

EUCLID, OH (WOIO) - An off-duty officer fired shots an at armed suspect around midnight Friday.

The officer was working a uniformed security job at Richmond Hills apartments on Euclid Avenue when he saw two men sitting in a parked vehicle. He said he could smell marijuana. The officer began investigating when another off-duty Euclid officer came to assist.

The passenger was taken into custody without incident, police said.

The driver began exiting the vehicle and began to flee on foot. The off-duty officer saw the driver was armed with a handgun. The officer said he was threatened by the suspect's actions and fired several rounds.

The suspect was not hit, police said, but the handgun was found.

The suspect driver has been identified and charges are pending.
