AVON LAKE, OH (WOIO) -

The most solemn U.S. holiday where we remember and honor those who died while serving in our country's armed forces was celebrated on Memorial Day Monday.

The American Legion, Post 211 and the American Legion Auxiliary hosted a Memorial Day parade and ceremony in Avon Lake.

More than 500 participants joined the Avon Lake High School band as they marched through the streets ending at Veterans Memorial Park that overlooks Lake Erie.

Cleveland 19's Paul Orlousky emceed the event and conducted the traditional memorial ceremony to salute our dead.

Organizers say nearly 2,000 residents showed up at Veterans Memorial Park to watch the ceremony.
