Canton's open container area takes effect Friday

CANTON, OH (WOIO) - It will be legal to carry an open container of beer, wine or liquor in a designated area of downtown Canton beginning Friday.

Mayor Thomas Bernabei will officially open the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area around 6 p.m. at Buzzbin Art and Music Shop. The zone was unanimously approved by Canton's City Council in April.

"Our goal is simple: to enhance the vibrancy and vitality of downtown Canton," Bernabei said.

The boundaries are marked to the north and south by Sixth Street North and Fourth Street South, and to the east and west by Walnut Avenue and McKinley Avenue, respectively.

Only patrons using the zone's official 16 oz. plastic cup will be permitted outside with an open container, officials said. Patrons may walk freely within the boundaries, and signage will designate the entrances and exits.

The area will operate from noon to midnight, daily.

Officials with the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce hope the area provides an economic boost by drawing more people downtown.
