2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season kicks off

2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season kicks off

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season began Wednesday and will run through Nov. 30.

Tropical systems do not always work around that calendar, though, and can happen at any time during the year. The conditions for development are typically more favorable between that June to November window.

Each year the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration releases how many storms it expects during the upcoming season, and this year's range is 10 to 16. NOAA said four to eight of those could become hurricanes, and one to four of them could become major hurricanes, meaning Category 3 or higher.
