Guest Editorial: RNC's impact on Cleveland

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Hi, I'm David Gilbert, president and CEO of the Cleveland 2016 Host Committee.

This July, Cleveland will host the 2016 Republican National Convention, the culmination of years of hard work to show the world our incredible community. More than 50,000 delegates, media, and visitors will attend the convention and millions more will watch.

Why did we want this challenge? First, for the estimated $250 million that will be spent in our community. Second, to accelerate exciting community projects like Public Square, renovations at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, and the new downtown Hilton Hotel. Third, and most important, for the unprecedented chance to solidify the changing narrative of Cleveland to those who can shape the course of our future.

As we get closer, there are three things we need to keep in mind:

  1. There will be some inconveniences to those who live and work downtown, but these are being made as minimal as possible.
  2. This will accelerate the pace of our community comeback and may be the tipping point for sustained growth.
  3. Be proud! We were chosen among many great cities for this honor. Not because of buildings, politics or money, but because of our people.

Thank you.
