LYNDHURST, OH (WOIO) -

A Mentor police officer and his pup solved a crime on their way home from vacation on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

Officer Bill Mackey was on his way home from vacation and had just picked up his K9 Bo from boarding when he heard radio calls about a robbery of over $1,000 in tools from a home improvement store. Officers had responded at the scene and were able to arrest one female suspect, but another male suspect, 44-year-old John Grotto of Lyndhurst, ran into the woods near Wildwood Park.

Mackey responded to the area with Bo, who was able to locate the suspect hiding in the brush within a half hour.

Grotto was charged with felony theft, obstructing and marijuana possession, with more charges expected. He had already had a felony warrant out for his arrest. His female accomplice has not yet been charged.
