CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A local community activist is raising awareness about the violence on the city's east side and he's doing it in a unique way.
Basheer Jones is camping out at 79th and Superior, an area he says is the one of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods.
Jones says that in the last two weeks, there have been several homicides in the area, which is one of the reasons why he chose to camp out there.
For three days he plans to meet with neighbors, city leaders and business owners. He wants solutions on how everyone can build a safer community.
"The people in this community deserve to walk in this place and be peaceful, they deserve love, they deserve not to be looked at. Downtown can't be the only one getting built up and the east side of Cleveland continues to look the way that it looks. So this is not just a problem that blacks have to solve, this is an American problem that we are dealing with," said Jones.
Jones invited Cleveland's Chief of Police, City Council members, community activists and pastors to join him in the conversations.
