Akron parents upset over transgender bathroom policy

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - There's a debate brewing in Akron over whether some parents are reasonable or overreacting.

They are upset about a transgender elementary student child using the girls bathroom.

The student attends Ritzman CLC on Trenton. Officials say the boy identifies as being a girl.

In May, the Obama administration issued guidance to schools saying they must allow transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that matches their gender identity.

Director of Communications and Marketing for Akron Public Schools Mark Williamson sent out a statement Thursday reiterating and supporting the president's transgender requirement.

"Federal, Title IX (nine) guidelines protect gender identity. Period.  Title nine mandates public schools must provide access to restrooms and locker rooms based on gender identification.  If public schools don't follow the federal law, we are at great risk of losing critical federal funding.  And that funding supports our most fragile students."
