CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) - Police have charged a 20-year-old man in the murder of 15-year-old Sunny Ravi Patel at Mr. Hero on Friday night.
Bond for Daveion Perry, 20, was set at $1 million. He was arraigned in Cleveland Heights Municipal Court Wednesday after being arrested Monday. Perry pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping.
Sunny, a sophomore at Mayfield High School, was working at his family's restaurant in Cleveland Heights when a man walked in and shot him in the neck, fatally wounding him. The shooter then took money from the register and fled.
Around 9 p.m. on Sunday, officers saw a male entering the Dollar General at Lee and East Overlook who matched the description of the suspect. After he exited the store, officers approached the suspect. He fled on East Overlook before being found and taken into custody.
Detectives will continue to investigate.
Patel's family says that he was planning on watching the Indians game with friends Friday night, but instead chose to work and help out his family. His father said that, even at a young age, his son made his family and working hard top priorities.
"He was a nice behaving boy," he said. "He always respected everyone."
Patel's funeral was held Monday at the Busch Funeral Home in Parma.
