MANSFIELD, OH (WOIO) -

The Ohio State Highway Patrol released dash-cam video Tuesday of a chase on Interstate 71 north through Mansfield on Oct. 2 that ended with a crash and the suspect dead.

The chase started after Shawn A. Johnson, of Westerville, Ohio, shot Alexander Melchert, a student at the College of Wooster, at a rest stop along I-71 in Delaware County, troopers said.

Johnson then jumped into his car and led troopers on a chase north on I-71 to Mansfield. At one point, he drove over road spikes, but kept going.

The video shows troopers in pursuit with speeds near 100 mph. Johnson attempted to pass a tractor-trailer on the right berm past Route 13 when he lost control, hit a guardrail and crashed into the median between the north and southbound lanes.

After surrounding the vehicle, they heard a gunshot and discovered Johnson was dead.

No officers were injured.

Melchert, of Wisconsin, continues to recover from his injuries.
