No arrests made in fatal Cleveland bar robbery

Friends shocked bartender was shot and killed inside west side bar

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Cleveland police are still searching for the man who killed a female bartender on Cleveland's west side during a robbery.

Melissa Brinker, 44, was working at the Cooley Lounge on West 130th Street Monday night when four men walked in and ordered drinks. Police said moments later they took out handguns and forced everyone to the ground.

When Brinker ran to the rear office and locked the door, the gunmen kicked it in and shot her several times.

She died at MetroHealth Medical Center.

Another woman, Melissa Mortan, 38, who tried to call 911, was pistol whipped to the head but survived.

"They got the money," said fellow bartender Carol Taylor, fighting back tears. "Why'd they have to kill her? Why'd they have to shoot her?"

No arrests have been made, though witnesses believe police have surveillance video that may help in the case.

Brinker was more than a bartender to so many patrons.

"The first time you see her, you like her," said Patty Hanshaw. "She's just so friendly and every time we came in she knew our names. Everyone loved her."

Brinker, who is from Ashland, leaves behind her parents, siblings, and three dogs.
