Arrest made in fatal Cleveland assault

DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Police believe a man was fatally struck in the head near a Dollar General in the 2900 block of E. 116th early Saturday morning.

Officers responded to the scene around 1 a.m. Major cross streets in the area are Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Shaker Boulevard.

The man, an unidentified black male in his 60s, was found on the sidewalk and taken to University Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead.

Avonte Kennibrew, 18, was arrested.

Police believe he ran up on the victim from behind and struck him in the head. A passerby called 911, they said.

The victim has not yet been identified, nor has a cause of death been determined.

The investigation is ongoing.
