While new study highlights opioid exposure among kids is up, a local boy dies after ingesting methadone

DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Cleveland police have issued an arrest warrant for a grandmother after the death of a 2-year-old boy.

The boy's mother recently returned to her home in the 4100 block of West 20th Street and noticed something was wrong. The mother told police that the boy seemed sad and clingy. She checked on him Monday night and noticed the boy was not breathing. She took her son, Noah, to the hospital, where he died. Police said he tested positive for methadone.

The grandmother, Norma Caraballo, has been charged with endangering children. She regularly watches the child while his mother is at work. She is reportedly a recovering heroin addict and takes methadone on a daily basis.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner will now determine an official cause of death.

A new study finds that every 45 minutes, poison control centers in the U.S. get a call about a child exposed to prescription opioids, and about 60 percent of the kids are younger than five years old.
