ELYRIA, OH (WOIO) - The Elyria Police Department's latest recruitment effort is one of its most diverse.
The department just wrapped up a recruiting effort that brought in more than 20 applications from women, something Police Chief Duane Whitely says he hasn't seen in a while.
"We would be lucky to have two or three female applicants in the past," said Whitely.
The department also saw more minorities wanting to become officers. Of the original 126 applicants, 86 were Caucasian, 12 were African-Americans, nine were Hispanic, two were Asian, three were mixed race, and one was Native American.
