AKRON, OH (WOIO) - The Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis is on the comeback trail. He will begin a rehab assignment on Sunday with the Akron Rubber Ducks, the Indians Double-A affiliate.
Kipnis has been out since early spring training with a strained right rotator cuff. He will serve as the DH on Sunday and will play second base Monday.
Jose Ramirez has played second base in place of Kipnis, but it was Yandy Diaz that earned a roster spot because of the injury.
Ramirez moved from third base to second allowing Diaz to play third. Diaz had a great camp, but is 3-for-15 (.200) since the season started. Barring an injury somewhere else on the roster he would likely get sent down to Triple-A Columbus when Kipnis is ready to return.
