CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - If the sod on the field at Progressive looks a little fresher this year, that's because it's new.
For the first time in seven years, there is new sod on the field at Progressive.
The grounds crew started tearing it all out around Nov. 5. It took nine days and more than a dozen people to lay the 9,800 square feet of Kentucky Blue Grass.
They've conducted some simulated games to see how the field holds up. They've also had some pitchers throwing a few innings to see how the mound holds up.
Maintenance was a bit of a challenge in the offseason with our "yo-yo" weather.
And yes, the grounds crew does get nervous for Opening Day because they know if the field plays well, the players do well.
"I think it's about the same anxiety levels, about the same butterflies, is there anything I missed? But in the end you trust what you've done, trust the prep that's gone into it," says Brandon Koehnke, Head Groundskeeper.
