BAY VILLAGE, OH (WOIO) - A Westlake family is breathing a sigh of relief after their beloved dog was rescued Saturday from the rocky shoreline of Lake Erie.
Pepper, a female border collie mix breed, had been missing since April 2, when she ran away from the family home. Despite attempts to find her in the surrounding neighborhood and on social media posts, Pepper remained missing for days.
On Saturday morning, April 15th, the Bay Village fire department began receiving calls that a dog was trapped on the rocks just east of Columbia Beach in Bay Village. When the fire department arrived on scene, they saw the dog in distress and immediately launched a rescue boat into the water, and slowly approached the animal.
"The rocks made the situation very dangerous and the only way to reach the dog was over water," Lt. Corey Gregg of the Bay Village fire department said.
It took only a few minutes to get the dog safely on the boat and to shore. It was then determined the dog was Pepper. Her rescuers said the dog remained friendly, calm and enjoyed a peanut butter sandwich, until she could be transported to the Avon Lake Animal Clinic.
Veterinarians said that Pepper suffered some minor injuries to her feet, including nails worn down to the quick, and she was dehydrated and malnourished, but overall she is expected to make a full recovery.
Pepper will be reunited with her owners Saturday night.
