ASHTABULA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) - Two Ashtabula County deputies are on paid leave after a deadly shooting Saturday afternoon in Colebrook Township.
The incident started just before 2 p.m., Saturday, April 15 when deputies got a call to respond to a domestic violence situation at 6918 Parks Road.
When deputies arrived, they found a 56 year old man with a weapon threatening to harm himself.
According to the Ashtabula County Sheriff Bill Johnson, deputies spent about 20 minutes trying to get the man to calm down and surrender.
It was at that time he refused, went into his front yard and pointed a rifle at the deputies. The deputies opened fire and the man was hit.
He was taken to a hospital in Geauga County where he was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. His body was then taken to the Cuyahoga County medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
The sheriff says the identity of the man will not be released at this time.
The deputies were not injured and BCI is assisting in the investigation.
