CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The murder of 74-year-old Robert Godwin, Sr. impacted his family the most, but it also left a significant impression on the Cleveland community.
Godwin was randomly murdered on Easter Sunday. A video of his murder was then posted on Facebook for all of social media to see. His killer led police on a 3-day manhunt, which turned into a nationwide search. The murderer eventually ended the search and his own life in Erie, Pennsylvania. on Tuesday, but sorrow is still deeply felt for the victim and his family.
A large memorial of balloons, flowers, and stuffed animals mark the spot along a fence on East 93rd Street where Robert was killed. Friends, family, and strangers are visiting the memorial daily to remember the man who his family said "loved everybody."
Basheer Jones, a candidate for Cleveland City Council, brought his children to the memorial. He wanted to use the moment to teach a lesson to his kids. "I wanted to bring my children here to, number one, to let them know life is precious and life is something you just never know."
The father, grandfather, sibling, and friend is expected to be laid to rest Saturday morning.
