AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Working out can be a challenge for parents, especially those with little ones. But what if you found a fitness program that the kids could be part of too?
This is exactly what one fitness club in the Akron area is offering.
The most popular class is "Stroller Cardio." and it's held at the mall. You can try it for free this Saturday at Summit Mall. BrittFit is the company and besides malls and about five other class locations, they also offer workouts online.
Ever wonder what happens at the mall before the stores open? On many Fridays at 9 a.m., at Beldon Village Mall and coming soon to Summit Mall, the strollers take over. Moms, dads, grandparents, and the kids do a little "Stroller Cardio."
"We do laps around the mall. We use things like benches, kiosks to use as props," explains Brittany.
Brittany Gerstenslager is the Britt behind BrittFit. She gave me a little preview of stroller cardio at her downtown Akron studio. She burns up to 450 calories in the hour-long class.
As the mom of a 4-year-old, and a former fitness instructor, Brittany understands the challenge parents face when it comes to working out.
"There are a lot of working families. They are working so hard, loving on their family and they shouldn't have to choose between staying healthy or being with family, it should just happen naturally together," says Brittany.
Kids and teens are invited to every class. They can participate as much or as little as they want. And besides stroller cardio, there are other options like yoga, dance fitness and strength training.
"Some people have called my classes a playdate for kids and a workout session for them and other moms," says Brittany.
The classes are for moms-to-be, dads, and grandparents too. They all can be modified to your fitness level.
Like many companies, Brittany started because she couldn't find a class like this herself. And she says that's usually what people who go to her class say, "I've been looking for this for so long."
