EUCLID, OH (WOIO) - Kevon Smith, the 23-year-old former girls basketball coach at Park Middle School in Euclid, sentenced Tuesday morning at the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. He will serve three years in prison.
Smith was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old Euclid student. He was also charged with unlawful sexual conduct and disseminating matter harmful to juveniles.
During the sentencing hearing, Smith apologized to the victim's family and his own family. He said he always wanted to be in a position that people could look up to, but he said he messed up. His action was inexcusable.
Smith's adopted mother also spoke. She said that people once thought Smith could have run for a city council position, but she admitted that he has lost a lot.
He was a coach and an educational assistant for Euclid City Schools at the time of the assault. Police say the crimes occurred between December 2015 and September 2016.
