CANTON, OH (WOIO) -

A fire Wednesday night destroyed a Canton-area business.

Firefighters were called to Canton Hardwood Sales located at 1416 8th Street NW around 10:30 p.m. When they arrived, the building was fully involved with fire.

American Electric Power shut off power in the area as a precaution because the building sits next door to one of their Sub Stations. Approximately 700 people were without power. The AEP website said power is estimated to be back on by 6 a.m.

A Canton fire official said the building is a complete loss. Crews remained on the scene into Thursday morning trying to stamp it out. Crews were waiting for a back hoe to arrive to knock down the building so that crews can completely put it out.

Tim McDermitt has been a customer for more than decade. He rode in to see the damage for himself and tells me, he feels bad for the owner.

"Once in a while if I needed some kind of wood or something and he was always obliging, he'd cut it for you and take it to size. He was a very nice guy," he said.

Now at least 10 people are without a job and there's no word yet on whether the owner will try and rebuild. All that's left for customers like McDermitt to search through piles of smoked-out splinters, sticks and soot.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
