'Canstruction' design competition stocks shelves at Cleveland Food Bank

STRONGSVILLE, OH (WOIO) - 40,000 cans of food have been turned into pieces of art for the Canstruction Cleveland event benefiting the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.

The design competition is raising awareness, food and money to fight hunger.

Architects, engineers and students are creating statues and logos out of the canned food. Their work is being displayed for the next week at SouthPark Mall in Strongsville. After next Saturday's award ceremony, the items will go to food bank for distribution. The groups behind the designs either purchased or had the canned goods donated.

Volunteers from Herschman Architects are behind a few of the creations including the face of the Cavaliers' LeBron James with the words "NBA CHAMPS".

Other work include Popeye the Sailor, a tribute to The Hunger Games and the Lake Erie Monsters logo. There's a total of 16 displays.

Next Saturday's award ceremony is open to the public. Prizes will be awarded in a number of categories including best overall design and best use of food labels. It runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at SouthPark Mall and will include food and drinks. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door.
