A veteran Austinburg Township firefighter died Friday afternoon after being struck by a car Thursday night.

Dave Lemponen, 83, was on-duty, directing traffic so the Ohio State Highway Patrol could investigate a minor accident, when a vehicle struck him.

The accident happened at the intersection of State Route 307 and Chapel Road, on the border of Austinburg and Jefferson Townships.

The driver who struck Lemponen remained at the scene. Troopers are still investigating what happened. Lemponen was life-flighted to University Hospitals in Cleveland, where he died the next day.

According to Austinburg Twp Fiscal Office David Thomas, Lemponen served on the fire department for over 60 years, and he once served as the chief. Thomas added that Lemponen was always willing to help serve when needed. He said he was a great man who was devoted to the residents.

Austinburg Fire Department posted the following statement on their Facebook page

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lemponen family. Dave passed away this evening. He provided many years of service to our department. Service details to follow."
