STARK COUNTY, OH (WOIO) - A trooper was hit by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 77 in Stark County on Thursday. The incident happened in Jackson Township around 12:30 p.m. on I-77 near Portage Street.
Investigators said they had received numerous calls about the driver going the wrong way on I-77 in the southbound lanes near Fulton Road in Canton.
Troopers intercepted the red 2011 Chevrolet Corvette near Portage Street in heavy traffic. The trooper was looking for the vehicle when 62-year-old Albertus George Ridgeway hit him head on.
Investigators said troopers used intentional contact to bring the vehicle to a stop and protect other motorists using the interstate.
The trooper and the suspect suffered minor injuries. Investigators said Ridgeway was found to be under the influence and charged with OVI, reckless operation, divided roadways and failing to wear a safety restraint.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in Massillon Municipal Court on July 26.
